But fundamentally, I think that the real problem is the marketization of everything -- the idea that the only value anything has is monetary. Judged by the standards of a product, even the best theater is invariably crappy -- there are no quality guarantees, it's expensive, there's an investment of time and work as well as money, it can't be mass-produced or distributed, the seats are either uncomfortable or too small or both, you either have to put up with a lot of jerks from Long Island or stick with your own snobby hipster crowd (which is actually OK, except that there are too few of us in any one city to sustain an audience base).
